TFC Film Picks for July 18,2007 Meeting

For those members that did not receive a hand-out of these picks, or those members who did not receive the TFC Newsletter sent out by Roger, here are the picks for next month: (NOTE: Anyone who does not get the newsletter and has provided Roger with their email address, please remember to put Roger’s name and email data into your address books. This will insure that the newsletter will not get tossed into your spam filter.)

DVD and VHS choices:

GRIZZLY MAN (2005) Directed by Werner Herzog @ 103 minutes. This is a fascinating docudrama about Timothy Treadwell, who for 13 consecutive summers journeyed to the Katmai Peninsula in Alaska to live amongst the grizzly bears. A true story with a tragic twist, this film will stun and haunt you. This was a member choice by Ron Boothe.

AN UNFINISHED LIFE (2005) Directed by Lasse Hallstrom @ 107 minutes. It stars Robert Redford, Morgan Freeman, and Jennifer Lopez. An embittered Wyoming rancher, still angry about the death of his only son in car accident, is suddenly confronted with his estranged daughter-in-law and a granddaughter he did not even know he had. Can love transform tragedy into merely regret? We can only hope so.

Theatrical Release at the Grand Theater.

LA VIE EN ROSE (2007) Directed by Olivier Dahan @ 140 minutes.

It stars Marion Cotillard, Sylvie Testud, and Gerard Depardieu. This film is a biography of the passionate life and loves of Edith Piaf –the little Sparrow –one of France’s most beloved singers from 1935-1962. Street singer, resistance fighter, torch songbird, lover, famous icon, and drug addict –all these were Edith Piaf.

The film that will be shown at Wine Styles is AN UNFINISHED LIFE. On Second Saturday.

  2. If, sir, you are “the” Damian Lewis –thanks so much for surfing about and finding our little blogsite. For fellow TFC members who might remember Damian as Richard Winters in Steven Spielbergs BAND OF BROTHERS, you will enjoy his portrayal of a scuzzball boyfriend to Jennifer Lopez, one Gary Winston, in AN UNFINISHED LIFE. He won a Golden Globe for his work in BofB. Few of us really know that Damian is a Brit, born in London in 1971, who lives quietly in England with his wife and family. While in training with the Royal Shakespeare Company, he worked with pals Daniel Craig and Joseph Fiennes. He even started his own theatre company for a time. It was there, playing Shakespeare, that Spielberg saw him, and then cast him in BAND OF BROTHERS (2001). He has been a film actor since 1993. I loved him as Jonesy in Stephen King’s DREAMCATCHER (2003). He turned down one of the roles in BLACK HAWK DOWN (2001) to do a role in THE FORSYTHE SAGA for the BBC. He played Benedick in a modern dress BBC TV version of MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING (2005). During my brief career as an actor, Benedick, was one of my favorite roles. “I do much wonder how one man, seeing how much another man is a fool when he dedicates his behavior to love, will, after he hath laughed at such shallow folly in others, become the arguement of his own scorn –by falling in love.” Ah yes, mouthin the Bard. Congrats Damian on your American accent. I never realized, as most of us didn’t, that you are a Brit. Like Christian Bale, Colin Farrell, and now Hugh Laurie, you Brits can mimic our Colonial twang excellently; certainly better than we can mimic English accents. I stayed with American Standard English. It seemed less pretentious. So, fellow members, enjoy Damian’s role in AN UNFINISHED LIFE as we view it on that 12′ screen at Wine Styles.

    Glenn
