AN UNFINISHED LIFE @ Wine Styles

Fellow cinephilles –yes, here it is again. It is time to prepare ourselves for another fine experience, the “Second Saturday Series” at Wine Styles. Back on June 9th, many of us viewed the letterbox version of Kurosawa’s DERSU UZALA. Today Tim and Mary are on their toes awaiting your phone calls and visits to Wine Styles ordering up your preferred beverages and snacks –per the arrangement now in place. Remember, WINE STYLES is at 2665 N. Pearl Street in Tacoma, and the phone number is (253) 756-1922.

This next Saturday, July 14, 2007, we will be screening Lasse Hallstrom’s AN UNFINISHED LIFE (2005). Hallstrom loves directing character-driven stories, and many of us recall his other sterling efforts, like MY LIFE AS A DOG (1985), WHAT’S EATING GILBERT GRAPE ? (1993), THE CIDER HOUSE RULES (1999), CHOCOLAT (2000), and THE SHIPPING NEWS (2001).

AN UNFINISHED LIFE (2005) was filmed up in British Columbia, substituting for Wyoming. It won the GENESIS AWARD in 2006. Harvey and Bob Weinstein, Mark Rydell, and Alan Ladd Jr. all came on board as producers. Make up artist, Jayne Dancose, won awards for the bear scars she created for Morgan Freeman. Robert Redford shines in this film, in one of the best roles he’s had in years. Deborah Lurie’s music is very lyrical and haunting. Cinematographer Oliver Stapleton, a long-time collaborator with Lasse Hallstrom, gave us some lush imagery to augment the story. Bart the Bear is one of the important characters in this film. Like Lassie, Bart II is carrying on the legacy of Bart I, who starred in THE BEAR (1988), and THE EDGE (1997).

AN UNFINISHED LIFE (2005) is an intriguing tale of a family torn asunder by the untimely death of an only son—a story of pride, obstinacy, humanity and dignity, and finally forgiveness and healing. It is an emotional rollercoaster, and it is well worth the ride. The film will screen at our regular start time of 7pm at WINE STYLES. Please arrive early to claim the best seats, socializing, and the ordering of refreshments. I am looking forward to seeing many of you there.

  1. The evening was another fine screening for the TFC members that attended. We missed Susan G., but David was there to coordinate the socialization and liven the proceedings. Even Ron B., who generally dismisses “sentimentality” in films out of hand, was hooked by this film. I counted more than 25 TFC members at his affair. Kudos to all of you who turned out. We did not have any of the Wine Style members this time, and no walk-ins. We, as a group who cherishes fellowship, just filled up the joint, and heartedly enjoyed our movie experience.
