Hey fellow members –it is time to start making our plans for the May “Second Saturday Series” Tacoma Film Club screening at Wine Styles. Last month we had a grand time watching OFF THE MAP. Our discussion both directly after the screening and at the film club meeting later was spirited and joyous. Tim & Mary brought off the event flawlessly, per their usual sense of warm professionalism.
Our screening in May will be Michelangelo Antonioni’s BLOW UP (1966). The one-sheet poster stated, “His camera never flinches –at love without meaning –at murder without guilt –at the dazzle and madness of youth today!” During the Mod 60’s, in the midst of swinging London, we find a successful fashion photographer, whose lifestyle is a pastiche of parties, pop music, promiscuity, and drugs –yet he feels that his life is “boring”. But one eventful day after a photo shoot in a local city park, while in his dark room working with the film, he realizes that he may have photographed a murder. This is Antonioni’s first film in English, and in England.
BLOW UP stars David Hemmings, in a role that launched his career, Vanessa Redgrave, Sarah Miles, Jane Birkin, and Varushka. The party scenes used the rock band, THE YARDBIRDS, when both Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck were still members. This is the first British film that presented full female frontal nudity. Director Sidney Lumet had already broken the ice in America with THE PAWNBROKER (1964).
Leonard Maltin wrote, “Pop culture parable of photographer caught in passive life style. Arresting and provocative film –rich in color, symbolism, and many layered meanings.”
The film was nominated for 2 Oscars, a Golden Globe, and it won the Golden Palm at
Cannes that year. Don’t miss this one!
The screening will be held at 7pm. Please arrive by 6:30pm so that you can find that perfect recliner for your comfort, and have the leisure to order the beverage and snack of your choice. See you all there!
