The Amateurs @ CSL

amateurs_ver2Fellow TFC members:

After the most wonderful summer picnic garden party imaginable and a terrific evening of film shorts orchestrated by Roger Kuhrt, we can all gather once more to do what we love—watch a movie. It has been a long three weeks since our last screening, so join us this Friday, August 1, 2008 at the Center for Spiritual Living on 206 North J Street in Tacoma.

This time we will be screening THE AMATEURS (2005), that was made under the title, THE MOGULS. This was a pick done by TFC member, Leilani King. This is writer/director Michael Traeger’s first feature film. He has been very active as a writer/producer in Hollywood, but this time he went for the brass ring, directing his own script and putting together a dream cast. There is a lot of light-hearted symbolism evident in the setting for the movie, Butterface Fields, and many of the character’s names—Andy, Barney, Helen, Otis, Floyd, Emmett, Thelma, and Clara; were all residents of Mayberry, R.F.D. on THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW. This interesting concept film was not well received by the media. Perhaps they were expecting a more “R” rated movie about the porn industry, ala BOOGIE NIGHTS, and instead they got a “PG” sweet and nearly innocent romp into small town America antics, where big dreams override logic, lethargy, and loss. Jeff Bridges said, “It is like Frank Capra made a porn movie.?” So come on down, see it for yourself, and have some fun with the gang.

THE AMATEURS, aka THE MOGULS (2005) Written & Directed by Michael Traeger @ 96 minutes. The film stars Jeff Bridges, Tim Blake Nelson, Joe Pantoliano, Ted Danson, William Fichtner, John Hawkes, Glenne Headly, Valerie Perrine, and Jeanne Tripplehorn. Andy, an unemployable dreamer, the town’s favorite failure, as part of his mid-life crisis, politics for “change” by recruiting a group of loveable losers, his pals at the bar, and talks them into making “the world’s most innocent adult film”. Will they succeed? Tagline, “not your average adult movie”. How can you go wrong with a movie that has characters all named after most of the cast on THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW?

Please arrive early if you want to socialize, have a meal, and immerse yourself in fellowship. We all gather downstairs in the kitchen area for soup and surprises. Roger will be serving from 6:15pm. Per usual, anyone who wants to contribute food, wine, or desserts—please do so. It makes for a boffo buffet. A film short will screen promptly at 7pm, and THE AMATEURS will show immediately afterward. There is no sweeter way to end the work week or spice up the weekend than joining us at CSL for fun and a film. See you at the movies.

Has “P. S. I Love You” been screened by TFC? I’d be interested in comments on this awesome love saga.
