Producers’ Film Picks for November 2014

The theme for these three films is “Struggling with a Plan”.


BIRDMAN (2014)


Written & Directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu & 119 minutes.

The film stars Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, Zach Galifanakis, Emma Stone, & Naomi Watts.

Synopsis: A washed up actor, who once had great success playing a  superhero in a movie series, must overcome his ego, family & financial problems as he mounts a Broadway play in a bid to reclaim his former glory.

This movie already won four big awards at the VENICE FILM FESTIVAL, & it received 5 stars in the TNT review.



Written & Directed by Lars Van Trier @ 130 minutes.

The film stars Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsborg, Kiefer Sutherland, Alexander Skarsgard, Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Rampling, John Hurt, & Udo Kier.

Synopsis:  A young woman’s extravagant wedding is complicated by her rocky relationship with her sister, who is paying for it, & overshadowed by a rogue blue planet that is on a collision course with earth.


Written & Directed by Charlie Kaufman @ 124 minutes.

The film stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Samantha Morton, Michelle Williams, Catherine Keener, Tom Noonan, Hope Davis, & Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Synopsis:  An eccentric theater director is struggling with his work, & several women in his life, as he is creating a life sized replica of New York City in a warehouse as part of his play.


BIRDMAN Opened at the Grand Cinema on 10/31/14. It has exceptional reviews, & could run for several weeks; but take no chances, & see the movie as soon as possible.

MELANCHOLIA will screen at CSL on Friday, November 7, 2014.

SYNECDOCHE, NY will screen at CSL on Friday 11/14/14.


The Center for Spiritual Living, the church building that we rent for our Club events, is located at 206 North J Street, on the corner of J & Division Streets, across from the Group Health Specialty Center.

The Grand Cinema is located at 606 South Fawcett Avenue, on the corner of Fawcett & 6th, in the old Merlino building.
