Fellow Film Club Members & Movie Buffs:
The Producer’s theme for this month is Masculinity: Collateral Damage
February is here, & we continue to dodge the Winter Bullet. We are proud, this month, to include two films directed by Clint Eastwood. The Tacoma Film Club is excited about screening one of his most acclaimed films, UNFORGIVEN (1992).
Eastwood is force of nature, as an actor he has appeared in 67 films–& now that he is 85 years old, he has released AMERICAN SNIPER, which might sweep the Oscars like several of his other films. He has directed 37 films. His career now spans 60 years; beginning it in 1955.
His first directorial job was with PLAY MISTY FOR ME (1971). Some of his films I love include THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES (1976), HEARTBREAK RIDGE (1986), THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY (1995), SPACE COWBOYS (2002), MILLION DOLLAR BABY (2004), FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS (2006).
The cinematography was done by Jack N. Green. He has lensed 44 films since 1986, 13 of which were working with Eastwood. Their relationship seemed to have stopped in 2000. Some of his other films include: ROOKIE OF THE YEAR (1993), BAD COMPANY (1995), TWISTER (1996), SPEED 2 (1997), GIRL, INTERRUPTED (1999), SECOND HAND LIONS (2003), SERENITY (2005), & HOT TUB TIME MACHINE (2010).
Clint Eastwood wrote the main theme for this film. The score was written by Lennie Niehaus, who has scored 34 films since 1971; several of them were Eastwood pictures; scores included TIGHTROPE (1984), PALE RIDER (1985), BIRD (1988), A PERFECT WORLD (1993), THE JACK BULL (1999), & COMANCHE MOON (2008).
Directed by Clint Eastwood @ 131 minutes.
The film starred Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman, Richard Harris, Frances Fisher, & Sol Rubinek.
Synopsis: Retired gunfighter, widower, failed farmer, William Munny accepts one last job, taking his old partner with him. A pair of cruel cowboys had battered & cut up some prostitutes, who hired Munny to exact their revenge; but in so doing the line becomes hazy between man & myth, hero & villain.
The movie won (6) Oscars: Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Screenplay & Cinematography. This is only the third Western to ever receive the Best Picture Oscar; the other two were CIMARRON (1931), & DANCES WITH WOLVES (1990).
TRIVIA: The movie was filmed in Alberta, Canada. Eastwood banned all vehicles within a mile of the set. The film had a 14 million dollar budget, & the gross domestic Box Office receipts were 101 million dollars. The title of the film was once called: THE CUT WHORE KILLINGS. The boots Eastwood wore in the movie were the same ones he wore while working on the TV series RAWHIDE (1959).
The script floated around Hollywood–Gene Hackman had turned it down initially.
ROTTEN TOMATOES rate the film incredibly high with 95% Critic’s Approval, & 94% Audience Approval. IDMb rated it at 8.3 stars.
Consensus from Rotten Tomatoes was “Director Eastwood strips away decades of Hollywood varnish applied to the Wild West, & emerges with a series of harshly eloquent statements about the nature of violence.”
Candice Russell of the SOUTH FLORIDA SUN-SENTINAL wrote: “Realistic & thoughtful, UNFORGIVEN has the pictorial sweep we’ve come to expect from the genre, & the intelligence too long missing from it.”
So mark your calendars for Friday, February 6, 2015 & join the Tacoma Film Club for a screening of one of the top ten Westerns ever made, UNFORGIVEN (1992). It will be shown at the Center for Spiritual Living, the church building we rent for our events, parties, & meetings. It is located at 206 North J Street, on the corner of Division & J streets, across from the Group Health Hospital.
Arrive early, around 6 p.m. & join many of us downstairs in the kitchen area for fun, fellowship, & food. It is permitted to bring snacks & beverages, including wine & beer, to share with others. Please remember to clean up after yourselves before coming upstairs to enjoy the movie. There is no food or drink allowed in the sanctuary during the screening.
There will be a Donation Box upstairs by the entrance to the sanctuary. All donated funds will go to help pay the rent for the space, & other Club expenses; such as membership cards, business cards, flyers, etc. Our biggest expense is for a Screening License annually, allowing us to show films to the public.
Diane Jensen will have the 2015 TFC membership cards available. The cost of membership is still a low $20.00, unchanged for all 12 years of our tenure. This year the card is graced with Lauren Bacall.
UNFORGIVEN will screen at 7:15 p.m. & it runs 131 minutes, so the curtain will fall around 9:30 p.m. See you at the movies!
