The theme for this month is: Masculinity: Collateral Damage.
February marches on & winter is showing all the signs of being kind to us, wet & warm without a kiss from the polar vortex. Still, we do have six more weeks to keep our fingers crossed.
Join the Tacoma Film Club this lucky Friday the 13th for a screening of the highly popular FIGHT CLUB (1999). It was directed by David Fincher, who started out his career working on TV commercials & Music videos. Peter Jackson, Bryan Singer, & Danny Boyle had all been considered for the Director’s chair.
He has directed 25 film projects since 1985, FIGHT CLUB, including ALIEN 3 (1992), SE7EN (1995), PANIC ROOM (2002), ZODIAC (2007), THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON (2008), THE SOCIAL NETWORK (2010), THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATOO (2011), & GONE GIRL (2014).
David Fincher said: “Directing is not about story boarding with pretty pictures to show the cameraman. I did not go to film school, couldn’t see the point of it. The fact is you don’t know what directing is until the sun is setting & you are supposed to get 5 shots done, but will only have time for 2.”
The film score was done by the Dust Brothers; John King & Michael Simpson. They have written scores for three films, including DEAD MAN ON CAMPUS (1998), & their rock group’s songs have appeared in 11 films, including, MUPPETS FROM OUTER SPACE.
The cinematography was done by Jeff Cronenweth, who is a frequent collaborator with director Fincher. He has lensed 21 films since 1995, including ONE HOUR PHOTO (2002), K-19: THE WIDOWMAKER (2002), & HITCHCOCK (2012). More than half of his credit are on Music Videos, where he met Fincher, working with David Bowie, Mariah Carey, & Usher.

It works great even on blood stains.
The first rule about Fight Club is that you don”t talk about Fight Club.
Trivia: Edward Norton actually hit Brad Pitt in the ear during one of the fight scenes, as per a secret order from Fincher. Norton & Pitt both took lessons in boxing, taekwondo, & wrestling for their roles. Pitt & Helena Bonham Carter spent 3 days recording orgasmic sounds for their unseen sex scene. Marla’s phone number, 555-0314, is the same as Teddy’s was in MEMENTO. Meat Loaf wore a fat suit to play “Bob with breasts”. Courtney Love & Winona Ryder were considered for the role of Marla. Reese Witherspoon had actually been cast in the part before she dropped out, considering the role “too dark” for her. Matt Damon & Sean Penn were considered for the role of Narrator. Russell Crowe had been considered for the role of Tyler.
Rotten Tomatoes rated the film at a high 80% Critic’s Approval, & 96% Audience Approval.
Richard Schickel of TIME MAGAZINE wrote: “This film illustrates the illiberal, impious, inarticulate fringe that threatens the smug American center with an anger that cannot explain itself, & can only act out its frustrations in inexplicable violence.”
