Producer’s Film Picks for June 2015

The designated theme for this month is:

“Poetic Icons: Past and Present”



SLOW WEST (2015)

Written & Directed by John Maclean @ 84 minutes.

The film is starring Michael Fassbender, Kodi Smit-McPhee,  Ben Mendelson, Caren Pistorious, & Rory McCann.

Synopsis: A surrealistic Neo-Western, filmed in New Zealand, it follows a 16-year old boy on a journey across 1880 Frontier America in search of a girl he loves, while in the company of a mysterious mentor/gunman.

The film has already been compared to Jim Jarmusch’s DEAD MAN.

Tagline: Wanted dead or dead.




Directed by Frank Pavich @ 88 minutes.

Synopsis: This is an excellent, & rare, Documentary about rogue Director Alejandro Jodorowsky’s ambitious, but ultimately doomed, film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic science fiction novel, DUNE.

The film features Alejandro Jodorowsky, Amanda Lear, H. R. Giger, & Pink Floyd.

Tagline: All about the greatest Science Fiction film never made.

This has already been compared to the documentary LOST IN LA MANCHA about the doomed film by Terry Gilliam.



Written & Directed by Leos Carax @ 115 minutes.

The film stars Denis Lavant, Edith Scob, Eva Mendes, & Michel Piccoli.

Synopsis: From dawn to dusk we follow the several adventurous vignettes of the mysterious Monsieur Oscar.

The film won awards at Cannes, & was the darling at Film Festivals all around the globe.


SLOW WEST will open at the Grand Cinema on Friday, May 22, 2015. It may have more than one week’s run, but don’t count on it.

JODOROWSKY’S DUNE will screen at CSL on Friday, June 5, 2015.

HOLY MOTORS will screen at CSL on Friday, June 12, 2015.



The Center for Spiritual Living (CSL), the church building we rent for our events, is located at 206 N. J Street, on the corner of Division & J, across from the Group Health hospital.

The Grand Cinema is located at 606 S. Fawcett Avenue, in the old Merlino Building, on the corner of Fawcett & 6th.

    Remember that there will be the Summer Break in July, so that folks can have some vacation time (I’ll be in Texas the first couple of weeks)–but also REMEMBER that the TFC Summer Party will be in July, with particulars (like date, time, etc.) to be announced later.
