The Producer’s theme for this month is: Depending on the kindness of strangers; A Comedy, A Tragedy, A Farce.
It was 63 degrees & sunny today, more like a June day than the first part of February. I, for one, am just smiling & enjoying it. This net Friday, he TFC is excited about our second screening his month, Sam Raimi’s DRAG ME TO HELL (2009). For a horror film, this is a sophisticated & fun romp that was loved by the critics, was a sensation at Cannes, & made a lot of money (90 million).
Sam Raimi, like Steven Spielberg, was making Super8mm films when he was ten years old, working with his childhood friend, Bruce Campbell. Most of the time, on the set, he wears a suit & tie, homage to Hitchcock. He was a pal to Wes Craven & frequently collaborates with the Coen Brothers, in 1984, he was roommates in a house with Bruce Campbell, Joel & Ethan Coen, Frances McDormand, Holly Hunter & Kathy Bates.
He wrote the screenplay for DRAG ME TO HELL IN 1998, but then spent almost a decade in the Big Time, directing Spider-Man features. He owns a classic 1973 Olds Delta 88, painted yellow, that has shown up in several of his films.
Raimi has directed 21 films since 1978, including THE EVIL DEAD (1981), EVIL DEAD 2 (1987), DARKMAN (1990), EVIL DEAD: ARMY OF DARKNESS (1992), THE QUICK & THE DEAD (1995), A SIMPLE PLAN (2008), SPIDER-MAN (2002), SPIDER-MAN 2 (2004), & SPIDER-MAN 3 (2007).
The cinematographer was Peter Deming, who has lensed 52 films since 1987), including EVIL DEAD 2 (1987), MARTIANS GO HOME (1989), MY COUSIN, VINNY (1992), LOST HIGHWAY (1997), AUSTIN POWERS (1997), SCREAM 2,3,& 4 (’97, ’99, & 2011), MULHOLLAND DRIVE (1999), FROM HELL (2001), & THE CABIN IN THE WOODS (2012).
The music was written by Christopher Young. A veteran composer, he has written scores for 121 films since 1968, including THE DORM THAT DRIPPED BLOOD (1982), DEF-CON-4 (1985), INVADERS FROM MARS (1986), HELLRAISER (1987), JENNIFER 8 (1992), VIRTUOSITY (1995), HARD RAIN (1998), ROUNDERS (1998), SWORDFISH (2001), THE GRUDGE (2004), GHOST RIDER (2007), & THE RUM DIARY (2011).

Synopsis: An ambitious loan officer, who evicts an elderly woman from her home, is saddled with a supernatural curse. She tries to find help, but all the while the forces of evil attack her.

ROTTEN TOMATOES rated it at 92% Critic’s Approval and 61% for the Audience Approval. IMDb rated it at 6.6 stars.
Steve Persall of the TAMPA BAY TIMES wrote: “It fits smugly right between the SAW films & SHAUN OF THE DEAD.”
Richard Roeper wrote: “I can’t deny it–I found it entertaining as hell.”
So mark your calendars for this Friday, March 11, 2016, & join the Tacoma Film Club for at screening of DRAG ME TO HELL. It will be shown at the Center for Spiritual Living (CSL), the church building we rent for our events–located at 206 North J Street, on the corner of Division & J streets.
Arrive early, around 6:30 pm, & join many of us downstairs in the kitchen area for fun, fellowship & snacks. It is permitted to bring snacks & beverages, including wine or beer, to share with others. Clean up after yourselves before going upstairs for the movie. There is no food or drink allowed in the sanctuary during the screening. There will be a Donation Box near the entrance to the sanctuary. All donated funds go for renting the space & other TFC expenses.
Diane Jensen will have the 2016 TFC membership cards available, still for only $20.00 for the year. This year we have the Elizabeth Taylor edition. DRAG ME TO HELL will screen before 7:30 pm, & it runs 99 minutes, so the curtain falls by 9:10 pm. See you at the movies!
