Producers’ Film Picks for October 2014

Our theme for this month will be “Personal Space”.

PERSONA (1966)

Directed by Ingmar Bergman @ 83 minutes.

The film stars Liv Uhllmann, Bibi Anderson, & Gunnar Bjornstrand.

Synopsis:  A celebrated actress goes mute while in the middle of a performance of ELECTRA. She retreats into silence. Her psychiatrist loans her a seaside cottage for the summer, & a nurse to accompany & attend her. During their time together, each is influenced by the other, creating a mysterious emotional mosaic of self discovery & survival.

Tagline: “One of the ten greatest films of all time.”

LIFE OF PI  (2012)

Directed by Ang Lee @ 127 minutes.

Written by David McGee, adapted from the novel by Yann Martel.

The film stars Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Tabu, Rafe Spall, & Gerard Depardieu.

Synopsis: A young man who survives a disaster at sea is hurled into an epic journey of adventure & discovery. He was forced to share this experience with a fearsome Bengal Tiger he knick-names Richard Parker.

This film won seven Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Musical score, Best Cinematography, Best Special Effects, Best Adapted Screenplay, & Best Editing.

THEATRICAL RELEASE

LOVE IS STRANGE  (2014)

Directed by Ira Sachs @ 94 minutes.

The film stars John Lithgow, Alfred Molina, & Marisa Tomei.

Synopsis:  After having a 40 year relationship, Ben & George tie the knot in an idyllic wedding. Soon after George is fired from his teaching position, & the couple is forced to sell their apartment. They move in with family & friends, having to split up, while they search for more affordable housing. This absurd situation creates a lot of chaos & stress for all involved.

This film did very well on the Festival circuit, scoring high at Sundance, Berlin, Los Angeles, & at Tribecca.

SCREENINGS:

LOVE IS STRANGE (2014) will open at the Grand Cinema on Friday, September 26, 2014. As per usual, it would be prudent to get out to a screening as soon as it can be done–to insure seeing it during its theatrical run.

PERSONA (1966) will screen at CSL on Friday, October 3, 2014.

LIFE OF PI (2012) will screen at CSL on SATURDAY, October 11. 2014. NOTE THIS NEW DAY. DUE TO A SCHEDULING CONFLICT WE HAVE MOVED OUR NORMAL FRIDAY SCREENING TO SATURDAY FOR THIS ONE TIME.

The Center for Spiritual Living (CSL) is located at 206 North J Street, on the corner of J & Division Streets, across from the Group Health Hospital.

The Grand Cinema is located at 606 South Fawcett Avenue, on the corners of 6th & Fawcett, in the historic Merlino building.
